‘THE TOOL SHEDS’ PROJECT HAPPENED IN CHRISTCHURCH’S QUAKE ZONE IN 2015.

With a grant from the Christchurch City council I rescued 1930s-40s statehouse garden sheds from demolition, renovated them into porta-units, and donated them to community groups.

Below is a brief overview of the journey…

A whole suburb of state houses near the river was demolished after the quakes. They were originally built with these standard issue garden sheds, four of which I managed to rescue.

With teams of volunteers the sheds were moved from their sites by car trailer (notice there are people lifting from the inside).

The sheds were moved to a vacant central city location to be renovated.

Bases were made, cladding was replaced and new roofs were put on.
